Neurodevelopmental Paediatrics

Here is an overview of what to expect from our Paediatrician appointments.

Initial Appointment

During the initial paediatrician consultation (up to 90 minutes), the Paediatrician will gather a comprehensive developmental, medical, and social history from parents or caregivers, observe and examine your child, and discuss any relevant background information.

At times, it may be appropriate for your child to step out of the room when sensitive topics are being discussed. For older children, we have an unsupervised waiting area. For younger children, please bring an activity and headphones to help keep them occupied in the room, or, if possible, an additional adult to be with them in the waiting area.

Following the initial consultation, additional steps are often recommended, such as completing questionnaires, conducting standardised tests, or arranging a pre/school observation. In some cases, our psychologist may be involved as part of the diagnostic process, and additional costs will apply for ongoing evaluation requirements.

Once all information is collected, a follow-up consultation (up to 60 minutes) with the Paediatrician will be scheduled to review results, discuss any diagnoses, and outline recommendations for therapy and ongoing supports.

Follow-up Appointments

Follow-up appointments are usually required after the initial consultation. The standard follow-up appointment is 60 minutes in duration. Shorter appointments for medication reviews are 30 minutes in duration.

Once you have seen one of our Paediatricians, you are welcome to request follow-up appointments at any stage. Follow-up appointments allow for continued assessment, discussion of assessment results, review of progress, and management of ongoing care, including medication review if relevant. Some follow-up appointments may be suitable to be carried out via video call or phone call, depending on the nature of the appointment.

We will inform you of any outstanding balance that remains payable by you prior to the appointment. For other health insurers, you will need to pay Cubbiehouse upfront and request reimbursement directly from your insurer. Please check all insurance matters directly with your insurer well before your appointment.

Paediatrician Waitlist

There is currently an approximate 4-month wait to see one of our Paediatrician’s. To join our Paediatrician waitlist, please complete the intake form and confirm you would like your child to be added to the Paediatrician waitlist.

Once we have added your child to the waitlist for triage purposes, it may be up to 6 weeks before we contact you to arrange an appointment. If we have not contacted you within 6 weeks, please feel free to give our friendly team a call on 09 520 3088. Please indicate on your intake form if you would be happy to take a last-minute cancellation spot.

Your child is very welcome to begin therapy supports at Cubbiehouse prior to seeing one of our Paediatricians if appropriate, although wait times may apply. Preschool and school observations can also be very supportive whilst you wait to see one of our Paediatricians.

Frequently asked paediatric questions

  • Does the Paediatrician evaluate for both ADHD and autism in the initial consultation? The initial consultation questions cover all developmental areas for a child evaluating a wide array of possible medical and neurodevelopmental differences. Differential diagnosis is always considered when evaluating a child within a medical and neurodevelopmental lens.
  • Will we receive a diagnosis of ADHD or autism in the initial consultation? Diagnosis of a neurodevelopmental condition often requires further assessment which will be recommended by your Paediatrician and discussed with you within the initial consultation. It is likely that a follow up appointment with the Paediatrician will be required and further assessment support with our psychologist may be required for some clients.
  • If further assessment is required for my child what will this involve? Further assessment will look different depending on your child’s needs. In the psychology assessment section, there are a number of other assessments that your Paediatrician may recommend.

Psychology (Educational and Developmental) Assessments

Here is an overview of what to expect from our Psychology Assessment services.

(Comprehensive) Educational Assessment

Supports understanding and evaluation of your child’s cognitive strengths and any areas of difference, and to evaluate current achievement abilities. Completing both assessments below will enable diagnosis of a Specific Learning Disorder (Dyslexia / Dyscalculia / Dysgraphia), if relevant.

An Educational Assessment (typically) involves:

  • WISC-V cognitive assessment, up to 1.5 hours in duration (clinic)
  • WIAT-III achievement assessment, up to 1.5 hours in duration (clinic)
(Note the WISC-V and WIAT-III assessments will be run across different days)
  • Parent only session (developmental case history), 30-45 minutes (via telehealth call)
  • scoring, interpretation, and comprehensive report writing
  • 30-minute feedback phone call to discuss outcomes and any recommendations

Approximate cost: $2065 (inclusive of GST)

Will the educational assessment evaluate my child’s attentional differences? Yes, the psychologist will be observing your child across the assessment administration in relation to their ability to attend and focus on the activities presented and their social engagement. There is often a need to administer the Conners questionnaires with parents and your child’s educator if further information in relation to possible neurodiversity will be supportive, this is an additional cost of $150. This can support understanding if referral to the Paediatrician is required or further assessments are required. If the Conner’s questionnaires are recommended, your psychologist will discuss this with you.

(Giftedness) Cognitive Assessment

Evaluates your child’s cognitive strengths and any areas of difference in relation to possible Giftedness. Either the WISC-V (6.5 years plus) or WPPSI-IV (3.5 years to 6 years) cognitive assessments will be administered depending on your child’s age. Note, this assessment will not evaluate Specific Learning Disorder’s, a comprehensive educational assessment is required if Giftedness and learning difficulties are suspected.

A Giftedness Assessment (typically) involves:

  • WISC-V or WPPSI-IV cognitive assessment, up to 1.5 hours in duration (clinic)
  • Brief parent discussion following the cognitive assessment (15 minutes)
  • scoring, interpretation, and comprehensive report writing
  • 30-minute feedback phone call to discuss outcomes and recommendations

Approximate cost: $1465 (inclusive of GST)

Intellectual Disability (ID) Assessment

If your child’s development is significantly behind their peers across all learning and developmental domains they may benefit from an intellectual disability evaluation. The WISC-V (6.5 years plus) or WPPSI-IV (3.5 years to 6 years) cognitive assessments depending on your child’s age, evaluates your child’s cognitive strengths and areas of weakness. An adaptive functioning questionnaire will also be administered with parents and on occasion your child’s educator to evaluate how your child is functioning in the home and community environments in relation to everyday activities.

An Intellectual Disability (ID) Assessment (typically) involves:

  • WISC-V or WPPSI-IV cognitive assessment, up to 1.5 hours in duration (clinic)
  • Parent only session (developmental case history), 45-60 minutes (via telehealth call)
  • ABAS-3 parent and educator questionnaire
  • scoring, interpretation, and comprehensive report writing
  • 30–45-minute feedback phone call to discuss outcomes and recommendations

Approximate cost: $1865 (inclusive of GST)

ADOS-2 Assessment (only) – recommended in conjunction with your Paediatrician)

The ADOS-2 assessment is a play-based conversational assessment. If your child is over 4-5 years old with good verbal communication skills, the assessment will run with just the child and psychologist present. If your child is under 4-5 years old or non-verbal then the assessment will run with a parent present. The ADOS-2 assessment can be run from 12 months of age upwards. The assessment is presented in an informal manner, however the activities covered are highly standardised and an overall score is calculated at the conclusion of the assessment.

A diagnosis of autism spectrum is not based solely on an ADOS-2 score, multiple components will be required to complete a full autism spectrum assessment. The ADOS-2 assessment is one component of an autism spectrum evaluation.

Our psychologist will run ADOS-2 assessments in collaboration with your child’s Paediatrician as part of an autism assessment. The assessment takes 60-90 minutes to administer so that your child feels comfortable in the new environment. Your child is welcome to bring in a comfort item or something they would like to show the psychologist to bridge rapport. Whilst it is a standardised assessment, it will feel more like a ‘getting to know each other session’ to the child.

Approximate cost: $1465.00 (inclusive of GST)

Note this can be discounted to $1265.00 if recommended by one of our Cubbiehouse Paediatricians and part of a comprehensive neurodevelopmental assessment. Our psychologist is happy to support external Paediatricians and their clients with ADOS-2 assessment or pre-school/school observation.

Preschool or School Observation

a standalone service, prior to seeing the Paediatrician or recommended by the Paediatrician

The preschool/school observation is a developmental screening evaluation of your child. Most often requested by your child’s Paediatrician as part of a comprehensive developmental assessment or gathering information prior to seeing your Paediatrician. The observation supports diagnosis evaluation and possible treatment recommendations.

Summary notes from the observation will be provided for parents and Paediatrician (if relevant) within 48 hours of the observation. Your child will be unaware of the psychologist’s visit; the psychologist slips into the background of the class and observes the child across class and or break times. The duration is 90-minutes.

To book the observation, please complete the intake form and be sure to include:

  • Your request for the preschool/school observation
  • The name of your child’s preschool/school
  • Age of child and or school year level
  • Name of educator, teacher and or SENCO
  • The Educators, Teacher’s and or SENCO’s email contacts

Approximate cost: $385.00*

*Travel costs will be quoted at the time of booking, dependent on the location required.

Following parent consent to book, we will contact the named teacher and SENCO directly to organise the observation. Please let us know if your child only attends their centre or school on particular days or times. Your child’s teacher is usually the best person to advise on the best day of the week and time of the day for the visit.

Please ensure you check with your child’s teacher and SENCO prior to giving us permission to contact them to give them the heads up that we will be reaching out.

We often get asked, what if my child masks in the school environment. The observation will not be wasted as it is important to see your child’s strengths as well as any differences. The psychologist will also get a chance to speak with the teacher or SENCO and gain a broader understanding of your child’s presentation in the school setting. If social skills are the main concern please mention this so the observation can cover a break time as well as class.

Frequently asked assessment questions

  • Will insurance cover the cost of my assessment? Insurance doesn’t often cover the costs of assessments with a psychologist. Please check with your insurer directly if this is relevant for you and your policy.
  • Can your psychologist support my child with a full autism spectrum evaluation? Yes, she can, our psychologist can support your child with a comprehensive autism assessment. If you would prefer this option please indicate this on your intake form. Please note, if ADHD is also suspected, our Paediatrician is recommended to be involved in the evaluation.

Payment (Specific for educational assessment services)

Occupational Therapy Services

Here is an overview of what to expect from our Occupational Therapy services.

Initial Assessment

All occupational therapy appointments begin with an initial assessment tailored to your child’s age and developmental stage.

For children aged 4 years and older who are able to engage in tabletop tasks (such as puzzles, drawing, or fine motor activities) and use verbal language as their main form of communication, our OTs would conduct a 2-hour comprehensive assessment.

For children under 4 years of age, who are not yet engaging in short tabletop activities, or not using verbal language as their main form of communication, our OTs recommend a 1-hour assessment.

Following the assessment, your OT will recommend a course of treatment that typically involves a block of consecutive sessions (approximately 10 weeks or longer) to provide your child with consistent support and the best opportunity for progress.

Report Options

We highly recommend a comprehensive written report with the initial assessment, as it provides a clear record of your child’s strengths and areas of need, and can be shared with schools, or other professionals (with your consent). Alternatively, an initial assessment without a report may also be appropriate and can be discussed with your OT during the initial assessment.

  • Will insurance cover the cost of my SLT assessment and on-going sessions? Insurance doesn’t often cover the costs with a speech language therapist. Please check with your insurer directly if this is relevant for you and your policy.

The goal is to pinpoint what’s driving challenges and to give you clear, practical guidance that feels achievable for your family. After the appointment, you’ll receive follow-up notes and ongoing support to help you put recommendations into practice with confidence.

Cancellation Policy (for all services)

An invoice will be sent with the details of your appointment and the payment information. Please support us in ensuring prompt payment occurs, this will re-confirm your appointment.

But help! Something happens between the payment and the appointment. We completely understand that life can happen, we try to be as accommodating as we can. However, please appreciate that our rent, admin, and practitioners still need to be paid.

If you need to cancel the appointment within the 48-hour period (excluding weekends), for any reason, in the first instance, admin will try to backfill the appointment with another client from the waitlist. This is only offered within office hours and cannot be guaranteed. The next option is that you will be offered a video telehealth parent call instead of a clinic appointment. Failing this, the practitioner will use the time to provide resources, information, school letters, or any other relevant support that can benefit your child and your family instead of the appointment.

**Note assessment bookings and OT initial assessments will require a deposit paid 48 hours ahead of the appointment (excluding weekends), followed by full payment by the date stated on the invoice.

48-hour example – If your appointment is at 7:30 am on a Monday, payment would need to be received by 7:30 am on the Thursday prior.
